Prairie Burn Photos

A fire-fighter starts by wetting the perimeter of the field to prevent the fire from spreading.

The fire-fighter then uses a drip torch to start the controlled burn

As the fire spreads, the fire-fighters must closely monitor its progress. Prairie burns
are usually done in early spring around April.

The fire helps create a natural fertilizer for the soil, by burning nutrients into the air
leaving mineral salts in the ground. The prairie fire will also help control weeds,
woody plants and non-native species.
The fire's smoke can be seen from miles away.
